		<description>&lt;p&gt;That&#039;s precisely why I think the U.S. should be helping to mediate a settlement. Israel is our ally, and no one else -- least of all the international justice crowd -- is likely to be as sympathetic to it as we are.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;It&#039;s entirely possible we&#039;re accomplishing deft feats of diplomacy to that end behind closed doors.  But with each day that&#039;s gone by without a ceasefire, where our public position has been one of total support for Israeli action, we&#039;ve drawn closer to a likely acquiescence to Hamas&#039; demands and a likely betrayal of Israel&#039;s.&lt;/p&gt;
